Mission of HKTDA
Beliefs and Mission
We believe that art cultivates character, enriches life, and brings joy through "beauty." We believe that art should permeate every aspect of life, blending with morality, intellect, physicality, and social harmony into one.
We believe that aesthetic education is a vital domain of education, and art education lies at its core. We hold that art education possesses exceptional pedagogical efficacy, particularly drama. Drama is a comprehensive art form, integrating elements such as music, visual arts, physicality, spatial awareness, and literature. It encompasses boundless possibilities while centering on human experience, making it an inexhaustible resource for educators.
We believe drama can serve as both the heart of art education and extend into all educational domains—internal and external. Internally, it fosters introspection, building character and values while encouraging multiperspective thinking and empathy. Externally, it enhances language, physical expression, and movement, helping students better develop their bodily awareness.
Guided by these convictions, our Association has actively promoted drama education in primary and secondary schools since its founding in 1994, with a strong focus on teacher training.
We believe that effective drama education hinges on teacher training. When a teacher truly grasps the wonders of drama, they carry it back to their school, sharing its magic with hundreds, even thousands, of students.
Successful teacher training must not only equip educators with skills but also help them understand and embrace our philosophy: infusing the beauty of dramatic art into every facet of education. This beauty is not merely a teaching tool—students should not only learn through drama but also experience its artistry within academic subjects. Education thus transcends mere knowledge, allowing students to engage with drama through their studies, elevating their aesthetic sensibilities and enriching their lives.
Artistic Vision and Goals
We are committed to advancing drama education in schools and communities. We strive to:
-
Use drama to humanize education, ensuring every student is valued—just as no actor is insignificant in a play—so they may face the future with confidence.
-
Inspire teachers to cultivate joyful learning environments, both inside and outside classrooms, where students develop creativity, communication, and collaboration.
-
Help teachers recognize and respect diverse student potentials, fostering a school and societal culture that celebrates varied intelligences—linguistic, musical, spatial, and more.
-
Empower teachers to leverage drama for enhanced learning efficacy, positioning students as protagonists and teachers as facilitators in an environment of growth and confidence.
We aim to nurture citizens with refined aesthetic judgment—students who are not only learners but also critical thinkers, advocates for the marginalized, and embrace multiculturalism.
Four Dimensions of Our Drama Education Development
Amid Hong Kong’s educational reforms, the Hong Kong Teachers Drama Association collaborates with member schools and educational advisors to advance drama education through four key dimensions:
1. Curriculum and Training Services
2. Research and Teaching Material Publication
3. Exchange and Promotion
4. Stage Productions
Strategies for Promoting Drama Education
Our association continuously practices the coordinated development of these four dimensions, collaborating with nearly a hundred schools and over a thousand teachers to implement various drama education programs, helping multiple primary and secondary schools successfully integrate drama into their formal curricula. Since 2000, our association has initiated numerous programs related to drama curricula, including teacher training in drama, moral and civic education, curriculum development for national education, and research on new high school curricula, all of which have received positive feedback from teachers and students, leading to recognition and support for drama education from various sectors of society, broadening the horizons of Hong Kong's educational community.
